MAD day 2

We just finished the second day of this Nazi diet. For those of you mothers to diabetic children...my heart goes out to you. Today Quinn cried for about 4 hours total because he was hungry and wanted to eat his "normal" foods. How do you look at your little child and tell them they can not have food? So until about 2:00pm Quinn ate three bites of eggs all the while crying and screaming. He can't drink milk any more nor can he have juice so he drank cream...slightly diluted cream. Can you imagine??!

Today I learned how to make Cheese Crisp Crackers. Quinn lived on crackers. So this is some what of substitute. He actually ate them which almost brought me to tears. He had a few olives a couple of strawberries and cheddar cheese. His carbs consisted of 1/3 of a banana, some veggi crisps and 1/8 of a donut. We didn't want to do the donut but by 6:00pm he had cried for hours and we decided to spend the rest of his carbs on the donut.

So the idea is that his body is now completely deprived of carbs and now he should enter ketosis. hopefully he will start producing ketones. I will probably test him in the next couple of days.

We hope this diet thing gets a little bit easier because food has almost been as hard as managing the seizures. Give us strength to endure another day...

Claire - did you get my email? I still don't understand... won't Q be at risk for Ketoacidosis if he has a large build up of Ketones? When Ethan has high ketones you can smell it on his breath, I almost don't need to do a pee test. They build up pretty fast due to dehydration or lack of insulin. They are really dangerous for diabetics.

Low carb diets are crazy hard for kids - they need carbs for brain development. I feel for you. Luckily Ethan was so young when he was diagnosed so he really doesn't know any different but he is starting to want what everyone gets and it is rough. Let me know if you want me to send you any diabetic stuff but you may get all of that at your appointment.

can you do almond milk? Ryan drinks it beacuse we think he is lactose intolerant... they have a chocolate and vanilla flavor. It is lactose and dairy free...
